career

Figuring out a career after college is hard. I know from personal experience. While some majors lead to very specific tracks, there are those among us who wanted to leave our options a little more open. While this may have seemed like a good decision at the time, after college is over, real life hits and decisions need to be made. Some can make them then, while others, like me, still struggle. Finding your life's purpose in a career isn't an easy task, yet it's one many have difficulty over. There are jobs and there are careers. And sometimes you have to settle for a job in order to find a career later. That's what I did.

Retail

Working retail isn't fun for me. While some love it, I do not. I mean, it definitely has its ups and downs. Interacting with customers can be a joy or an absolute burden, depending on their attitude. You, on the other hand, have no choice: your attitude is upbeat and positive so you can sell as much useless junk as you can for your company. If that phrase isn't in your training manual, it should be... ;)

I hope you understand that I am taking a sarcastic tone with this issue. Not all retail is bad. There are plenty of legitimate companies out there that pride themselves in selling high quality merchandise to meet consumers needs. But I believe there are far more that are simply in business to make a profit at all costs. While the customer may be number one when they get him or her to buy a product, afterwards it is good bye, sucker! You chose to buy a terribly made product that you "absolutely needed."

Having a retail job has taught me so much more about what Americans take for granted. See my posts on the subject for more details. And be sure to look for updates on this page for more details on career life in general.
